This series borrows its name from a painting entitled The Storm (L’Orage), dated 1880, by French author Pierre-Auguste Cot (1837–1883). A reproduction of this painting can be seen in the wall of a room depicted on the first photograph of the series. The painting was immensely popular and widely reproduced. Its presence in the house of this family, along with other clues which can be read in the clothes, furniture and decorations of the rooms, allows for some speculation on the taste and social status of this family. These large glass negatives are also the sign of something. If one cannot know anything else, at least one can sense that these were wealthy educated people who valued (and probably practiced) photography, still a young and expensive technique in the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, where these negatives could be placed.

 

A set of found negatives like this stimulates another consideration relating to the fate that private collections of photographs may have in our times. Despite their fragile chemical nature, which condemns them to disappear, they can outlive their creators and become available in a global market where anything can be bought and sold. Photographs in all its various formats and materials seem quite suited to collecting and travel, to be appreciated outside of the histories of photography which seem already saturated with authors and styles.

The original negatives included in this work were bought on EBAY U. K. with no information at all on their origin, authorship or identity of the people depicted in them. I assume these images were lost because whoever they belonged to, disappeared. If that is not the case, and this work is seen by someone who can identify and prove a relationship to the people in the pictures, or the one who made them, I will gladly return the original negatives.

 

 

Esta série de fotografias apropria-se do nome de uma pintura, The Storm (L’Orage), datada de 1880, do pintor francês Pierre-Auguste Cot (1837–1883). Pode-se ver uma reprodução desta obra, na parede que se encontra na primeira fotografia desta série. A pintura tornou-se muito popular e foi reproduzida em grande escala. A sua presença na casa desta família, juntamente com outras pistas reveladas pelas roupas, mobiliário e decoração dos espaços, permitem alguma especulação sobre o gosto e o estatuto social destas pessoas. A permanência destes grandes negativos de vidro também nos diz alguma coisa. Se não se pode confirmar pelo menos sente-se que estas eram pessoas abastadas, com educação e formação artística, que valorizavam (e eventualmente praticavam) a fotografia, ainda uma técnica recente e dispendiosa na viragem do séc. XIX para o séc. XX, onde este negativos parecem pertencer.

 

Um conjunto de negativos “encontrados” como estes, sugerem outras considerações relacionadas com o destino que poderão ter as colecções de fotografias privadas nos nossos tempos. Apesar da sua fragilidade química que as condena ao desaparecimento, as fotografias tendem a sobreviver aos seus criadores e a aparecer no mercado global onde tudo se compra e vende. As fotografias nos seus variados formatos e materiais, que ficam orfãos dos seus criadores, parecem estar naturalmente preparadas para viajar, ser coleccionadas e apreciadas, fora das histórias da fotografia que parecem já estar saturadas de autores e estilos.

Os negativos originais que são o objeto deste trabalho foram comprados no EBAY do Reino Unido, sem qualquer informação associada sobre a sua origem, autoria ou identificação das pessoas representadas. Parti do princípio que essas pessoas já desapareceram, mas se não for esse o caso e alguém conseguir identificar ou provar uma relação com elas, terei muito gosto em lhes devolver os negativos originais.
